microstructure characterization and mechanical properties of al-sicp composites
Authors
abstract
in recent years the aluminum matrix composites are gaining wide spread applications in automotive, aerospace, defense, sport and other industries. the reason for this is their exciting properties like high specific strength, stiffness, hardness, wear resistance, dimensional stability and designer flexibility. the present work reports on mechanical properties and microstructure analysis of al-sic particulate composites with different wt. % of sicp. al-sicp composite specimens with different weight % of sic (viz. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt. % of sic) were fabricated through casting process. the induction furnace and open furnace were used for melting of al-sic particulate composites. the induction furnace gives the advantage of self-stirring action on the introduction of sic particles. grinding and fine polishing was done using diamond paste to prepare different samples for microscopic study. the microstructure examination of the polished and carefully etched al-sicp composite specimens showed that the structure consists of a network of silicon particles, which were formed in inter-dendritic aluminum silicon eutectic composition. these sem micrographs clearly indicate that the sic particulates are dispersed uniformly in the al matrix even at higher percentage such as 20 weight % sicp. the sic particulates were observed to be in irregular shape.

full textMECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES (Al/SiCp) PARTICLES PRODUCED BY POWDER METALLURGY
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) have become attractive for engineering structural applications due to their excellent specific strength property and are increasingly seen as alternative to the conventional materials particularly in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. Al/SiC MMC has aluminium matrix and the silicon carbide particles as reinforcements and exhibits many desirable mech...

15 صفحه اولA Comparative Study on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-Si-Cu/1wt %NCP Composites after T6 Heat Treatment
In this article, microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu/NCP composites were evaluated. Reinforced nanocomposites with 1 wt% nano-clay were fabricated by the method of the stir casting. Stirring times and temperatures were variable parameters to produce specimens. Consequently, the effect of a T6 heat treatment, which contained solutioning at 490 ºC for ...
full textMicrostructure and mechanical properties of pressureless sintered alumina-silver composites
The silver toughened alumina ceramics, which were fabricated via a conventional ceramic processing route using commercially available alumina and silver oxide powders as the starting materials, exhibit a higher fracture toughness (6 to 9 MPamo.5) than the monolithic alumina ceramic ( 2.5 to 3.0 MPamo.5). The weak interfacial bonding between the silver inclusions and the alumina matrix is charac...
